St. Olaf Band in Concert

Fri May 5, 2023

Orchestra Hall

~2 hrs, including intermission

The St. Olaf Band, conducted by Dr. Timothy Mahr, will perform a special concert at Orchestra Hall on Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1891, the St. Olaf Band is the oldest music organization at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, a campus internationally renowned for its high caliber of musical ensembles. Dubbed “one of America’s preeminent bands” by the New Yorker, the St. Olaf Band performs the very best compositions and transcriptions for symphonic band, producing an exciting, crowd-pleasing style.

In 1994, Dr. Timothy Mahr joined the St. Olaf College faculty and became conductor of the St. Olaf Band, a position he would hold for the next 29 years. Under his baton, the St. Olaf Band has been pushed to reach new levels at every possible opportunity. Besides traditional annual domestic tours, the band, under Dr. Mahr’s direction, has toured in Norway, Britain and Ireland, Mexico, Japan, Spain, Italy and France and, in 2018, Australia and New Zealand. The band celebrated its 125th anniversary with a winter tour climaxing in a concert at Carnegie Hall in 2016. The band was also the 2021 recipient of The American Prize for small college band programs.

With Mahr set to retire from St. Olaf in the spring, this concert is a celebration of his career, and the tremendous impact he's made on students, colleagues, and audiences across the country.
